AI Advisors

AI Advisors are faculty leaders who connect Indiana University’s AI resources and expertise with the needs of schools and academic programs. Through this university-wide network, Advisors help faculty strengthen AI literacy, rethink curriculum and assessment, develop discipline-specific guidance, and prepare students to use AI with judgment and responsibility.

Faculty leadership for human-led, AI-enabled learning

Artificial intelligence is changing what students need to learn, how faculty teach and assess learning, and how every discipline approaches professional practice. Indiana University’s response begins with people: human judgment, disciplinary expertise, and a shared responsibility to use AI thoughtfully.

The AI Advisors program brings this approach into IU’s schools and academic programs. AI Advisors are trusted faculty leaders who connect university-wide AI resources and expertise with the priorities, questions, and practices of their disciplines.

The AI Advisors program is led by Justin Hodgson, Strategic Director of Generative AI Faculty Initiatives, and Michele Kelmer, Director of Faculty Engagement and Outreach in UITS. For more information, please email hale@iu.edu.

There is no single approach to AI that will work for every field. What responsible and effective AI use looks like in medicine may differ from what it looks like in business, education, the arts, or the humanities.

AI Advisors help their schools determine what students should know and be able to do with AI and how programs can prepare them to use it with confidence, ethical reasoning, and sound professional judgment. At the same time, Advisors bring local perspectives and emerging needs into IU’s broader AI work.

This distributed model allows IU to move forward together while preserving the disciplinary differences that make responsible AI adoption possible.

Working with faculty, academic leaders, and IU’s Human + AI Learning Ecosystem, AI Advisors:

  • Lead conversations about AI literacy, durable human skills, and responsible AI use
  • Help academic programs map AI-related knowledge and skills across the curriculum
  • Coordinate the development of practical, discipline-specific AI playbooks
  • Connect faculty with workshops, consultations, fellowships, grants, technology support, and other IU resources
  • Surface faculty questions, concerns, and promising practices
  • Share evidence and experience through a university-wide network of faculty leaders

Advisors are conveners, translators, and connectors. They are not expected to be their school’s only AI expert or to replace instructional designers, technology specialists, policy offices, or faculty governance.

Each Advisor works with colleagues in their school to identify priorities and develop an approach suited to its students, programs, and disciplines. Advisors meet as a university-wide network to exchange resources, learn from emerging practices, surface shared challenges, and help shape IU’s broader AI efforts.

Through this distributed network, IU can connect university-wide strategy with local action, expand effective practices, and keep its AI initiatives grounded in faculty expertise, disciplinary context, and student learning.
